Photo Essay ( Division B,Division A ) Back

  • Place Name: First Place
    Contestant Name: The Cap Times
    Entry Title: Battleground Wisconsin
    Entry Credit: Ruthie Hauge
Judge Comment: In all the years that I’ve been judging photojournalism contests from around the country, this is the BEST Photo Essay I have ever seen!! I simply can’t image the forethought, the planning and the logistics involved in putting this piece together! And Ruthie needs to be recognized for all of that [even though she probably had help from many other staffers]! I have never given a perfect score to any image, but this is absolutely worth it considering all the work that was put into it! I haven’t seen all of the other photos in the competition but if I had, this would be my selection for the Best in Show
  • Place Name: Second Place
    Contestant Name: Green Bay Press-Gazette
Entry Title: A closer look at some of the superfans of the Green Bay Packers
    Entry Credit: Sarah Kloepping
Judge Comment: I’ve always known that the Packer Fans are a totally different breed and this collection of images just solidifies that opinion! ?! I love the idea of these portraits and the way they were executed, and I like the unifying feature of the lighting, it really holds them all together. Plus, it is totally original to someone from a different part of the country! This collection must have received raves from a huge base of GB Fans! The standout image for me is Tundra Man. The work he puts into the costume for every game is amazing!
  • Place Name: Third Place
    Contestant Name: The Cap Times
    Entry Title: Spooner reunion
    Entry Credit: Ruthie Hauge
Judge Comment: Very good job covering the Reunion! Plenty of shots of Spooner performing as well as some good backstage imagery, the excitement of the crowd and other important elements of the story. Of course, Ruthie has no control over the lighting used in the performance, but she’s done a great job of getting the exposure in a constantly changing environment and the colors simply pop off the page. Considering the importance of the band to Madison, I think this is a great job highlighting a group that is so loved in the area 32 years after their last performance together!
  • Place Name: Honorable Mention
    Contestant Name: Wisconsin State Journal
    Entry Title: Wind Farm
    Entry Credit: John Hart
Judge Comment: This is the type of photo story that I always like to run across, seeing the innards of some place I’ve never been in! Plus, the breathtaking experience of being that high up AND walking outside on the very top of it! Good variety in the selection of images giving the viewer multiple perspectives and angles of view on what it looks like. Nice job of showing the readers something they’ve never seen before! [One of the great experiences of being a photojournalist in my mind!]
