Judge Comment: What are your page dimensions? Square? Pg.1 - Best designed page I’ve seen so far from this pub. No clutter. Everything works to lead the eye through the content. I usually hate cut-out photos, but the cow kinda works down there. Calf photo is fantastic. Pg2 - General comment: Your lead headlines MUST be bigger. You need to build that visual hierarchy for your reader. Otherwise, a good, clean page. Pg3 - A nice little display, but again Make the headline bigger. One little thing: the caption on the lady/reindeer photo sort of runs into the story on casual read. A hairline between the caption and the column of text would keep readers from going astray.

Entry Title: Hardcore UNTIL THE END; Net Gains; Arbor Vitae firefighter training

Judge Comment: Pg 1 (hardcore) Well done. But too many headline typefaces. Once you committed to decorative main headline, you need to carry that concept through - perhaps with a light sans-serif? Pg2 - again clean, straightforward design — but too much sameness in the photos. Lose a couple, adjust the sizes of the others to build a visual hierarchy pg3 - not a fan of the background image. It clutters the rest of the page. Again, too much visual sameness with he photos. Lose a couple, then re-size to build a flow. As for mortising photos; just don’t

Judge Comment: Pg1 - moo.sic Lose a couple of the photos and rearrange the page. It will be stronger. The reverse head in red is too strong an eye magnet. It detracts from the photos. Pg2, cinders — very cute page. I Ioved it up until you mortised one of the strongest photos. Please don’t do that. Pg.3 good, clean news page

Judge Comment: The secret to tombstoning headlines is to make one visibly bigger than the other - not just by a few points. Pick a lead story and have the headline reflect it. Pg3 - Overall, good page.
