Judge Comment: Incredibly moving and powerful video, feature photography and writing allow Brad Schwaegerl's presence to shine through. The writing does a stellar job of showing readers the nuances of a person living with a health condition while also someone who is deeply rooted in a community. The fact that readers also get to hear from his community members, how they support one another, disagree, agree etc. It goes a long way toward readers' ability to witness a deeper view of people who are homeless while avoiding shallow reporting, cliches and stereotypes. The reporter artfully shows us the layers of humanity, his hopes, and worries in a way that is truly relatable. Also woven through is the ripples of local municipal stances' impacts on his neighbors and others in similar situations. This piece is a fully formed feature with solutions journalism included.
