2025 WNA Foundation Better Newspaper Contest

Community Engagement Award ( Division E,Division D) Back

  • Place Name: First Place
    Contestant Name: The Star News
Entry Title: Taylor County Trivia Game
    Entry Credit: Staff
Judge Comment: This is the winning entry mainly because of its ingenuity. The publication created a box game in the Trivial Pursuit mold, with spots sold to local businesses and entities and then sold the game to community members. The entry includes a summary story and examples of how the game was advertised in the commmunity.
  • Place Name: Second Place
    Contestant Name: Spooner Advocate
    Entry Title: The Source
Entry Credit: Janis Redman, Michelle Carlson, Regan Kohler
Judge Comment: A 56-page guide to Washburn County, including governmental leaders, statistics, organizations' contact info. This is a pretty good booklet that any community would benefit from having available. Shows lots of work, but also includes plenty of space for advertising. Notes did not include whether this is an original guide or one that is updated annually/periodically; even updating would be a lot of work.
  • Place Name: Third Place
    Contestant Name: The Chetek Alert
Entry Title: The Chetek Alert engages community in multiple ways
    Entry Credit: Kenton Troutman
Judge Comment: A five-part entry that shows some of the public affairs reporting/features the newspaper covers in its small community. Some decent writing.
  • Place Name: Honorable Mention
    Contestant Name: Monroe County Herald
Entry Title: monroe county herald engagement
    Entry Credit: Eric Roellig
Judge Comment: A fairly good column on the importance of newspapers in today's society. Small amounts of humor and plenty of seriousness.
