Breaking News Reporting ( Division A) Back

  • Place Name: First Place
    Contestant Name: The Daily Cardinal
Entry Title: Madison police conduct ‘bar checks’ Thursday after signaling end to ‘raids’
Entry Credit: Annika Bereny, Ella Hanley
Judge Comment: Nicely written. Asking the bar owners how they feel about these enforcement efforts and how they attempt to adhere to the liquor laws would add another angle to the story.
  • Place Name: Second Place
    Contestant Name: Media Milwaukee
Entry Title: BREAKING NEWS: UWM Freezes Spending Amid Impact From Executive Orders
    Entry Credit: Charlie Skrade
Judge Comment: There is no indication in the story as to when the email was sent and received. This is well-written, focusing on the actions, giving the source info and answering the questions concerning the impact of this federal action on the University. The one problem I have is the last sentence - it is conjecture and speculative - and does not add to the strength of the un-biased reporting previous to this statement.
  • Place Name: Third Place
    Contestant Name: The Badger Herald
Entry Title: Schimel criticizes drop box voting fraud in dorm rooms, Madison official says these drop boxes do not exist
    Entry Credit: Anna Kristoff
Judge Comment: Solid reporting, supplemented with background information. Well-structured and easy to read. Well sourced
  • Place Name: Honorable Mention
    Contestant Name: The Daily Cardinal
Entry Title: UW receives approval to move L&S’s largest majors to new AI-focused school
    Entry Credit: Annika Bereny
Judge Comment: Well written with solid reporting and nice transitions. Thoroughly explained, but I wonder what the impact on students will be. How will this improve the student experience and what would be the competitive advantage for those moving into those career areas? Also, what did the working groups find and/or suggest?
