Place Name: First Place Contestant Name: Media Milwaukee Entry Title: La Frontera - Crossing the Rio Grande Entry Credit: Elizabeth Lintonen, Liliana Fannin, Colton Pemble, Dominic Rodriguez, Samantha Calderon, Juan Rodriguez-Mora, Sonia Spitz Judge Comment: This package of stories stood out in a very strong class of public affairs entries. The stories were richly sourced and organized well. The writing and visuals are very strong and complement one another. This package of work is a very compelling and timely read.
This would have gotten a 10 but I as a veteran editor really, really loathe “we” in any story. It’s not about you. It is a distraction from otherwise fine work.
Place Name: Second Place Contestant Name: The Badger Herald Entry Title: Proposed copyright policy change sparks concerns among Universities of Wisconsin faculty Entry Credit: Zindzi Frederick Judge Comment: a well-sourced and interesting story. I liked the information, it was used and how the flowed flowed. I would like to have seen more about, why does this matter to me as a student? That may be hard to quantify but . . .

I wish there had been some way to find and interview a student who enrolled and then went elsewhere. (I realize that would be difficult if not impossible but it might have been worth a shout-out on social media to track someone down.)
Good organization and lots of good sources.
Place Name: Honorable Mention Contestant Name: The Badger Herald Entry Title: New Minnesota statutes are shielding students from housing woes. Can Madison follow suit? Entry Credit: Anna Smith Judge Comment: This was a well-done story, and a great way to compare and contrast legislation from another state versus what it could mean for your state.
Good use of sources and good writing. I would like to have seen a quote from a student or students affected by poor landlord practices.
