2024 WNAF Collegiate Better Newspaper Contest

Collegiate Journalist of the Year ( Division A,Division B) Back

  • Place Name: First Place
    Contestant Name: The Daily Cardinal
    Entry Title: Tomer Ronen
    Entry Credit: Tomer Ronen
Judge Comment: Thorough reporting on important issues, especially the report on rent credits and a look at how voters feel (split election). Good ledes, and EZ to read reporting. But what set this entry apart from others in a tough category to pick a winner was the column: you actually took a stance on something, even if it was sports related.
  • Place Name: Second Place
    Contestant Name: The Badger Herald
Entry Title: Catherine Carroll for Collegiate Journalist of the Year
    Entry Credit: Catherine Carroll
Judge Comment: Variety is the spice of life, and the variety of story topics this writer is willing to tackle is impressive. Stories are well done as well. Writer’s talent shows in stories ranging from literacy services to suicide prevention walk, to ‘Born a Badger.’ Difficult to pick this entry for second instead of first, and on another day the ranking could easily be flip flopped. Excellent reporting and writing.
  • Place Name: Third Place
    Contestant Name: The Daily Cardinal
    Entry Title: Gavin Escott
    Entry Credit: Gavin Escott
Judge Comment: This writer possesses a strong understanding of politics, evident in the ‘America has failed us’ story, which was best of his entries. His stories highlight issues students face (unenrolled disabled student), and touch on issues college students want to talk about but too many people don’t want to hear (JD Vance memoir). Challenging stores, for sure, yet presented clearly to the reader. Well done
  • Place Name: Honorable Mention
    Contestant Name: The Clarion
Entry Title: Kelly Feng - Reporter of the Year
    Entry Credit: Kelly Feng
Judge Comment: If this was a contest for best personality stories, this writer is the EZ winner. Some of the best stories in the contest, just missing a story or two on issues so could judge ability to cover topics and not just people. Story on first time voting was top notch. There is a place in journalism for your story telling about people!
