2023 WNA Foundation Better Newspaper Contest

Best Sports Pages ( Division D) Back

  • Place Name: First Place
Contestant Name: Grant County Herald Independent
Entry Title: Arrows rush past Mauston
    Entry Credit: A.J. Gates
Judge Comment: Chockful of varied presentation styles (schedule, scores), creative graphics integrated into text, sports schedule on every front page useful. The Feb. 26 and March 9 issues are especially dynamic. I think this entry is the clear winner in this category. Well done overall.
  • Place Name: Second Place
    Contestant Name: The Platteville Journal
Entry Title: The Platteville Journal Sports Section
    Entry Credit: Jason Nihles
Judge Comment: Information heavy. Each front page was laid out almost identically (is this purposefully done that way?)--could use more creativity. Information variety--scoreboard and baseball card-like individual team member photos make this entry stand out among the others.
  • Place Name: Third Place
    Contestant Name: Superior Telegram
    Entry Title: Superior Telegram Sports
    Entry Credit: Telegram staff
Judge Comment: Layout mostly horizontal but good photo work throughout. Some terrific action shots in Parts 1 and 2.
  • Competition Comment: The top three really stand out. Some of the lower-scoring entries are staid, and evoke a high school newspaper vibe. Photos are especially important with sports reporting, and some entrants could use some help in the photo department.
