Place Name: First Place Contestant Name: The Post-Crescent Entry Title: Three days at the Mile of Music festival in Appleton Entry Credit: Dan Powers, Bill Glasheen Judge Comment: A lot of hard work went into this project. Captivating photos. Lots of names and faces. The Post-Crescent should be commended for allocating the time, space and resources to such a project. These sorts of stories and photo essays remind your readers why newspapers continue to play an important role in their daily lives. Keep up the good work.
Place Name: Second Place Contestant Name: The Cap Times Entry Title: Homeless family receives free birthday camping weekend Entry Credit: Ruthie Hauge Judge Comment: Story-telling at its best. Captivating photos. Great eye for detail. Had a hard time deciding whether this should be No. 1 or No. 2 in my ranking. Keep up the good work!
Place Name: Third Place Contestant Name: The Cap Times Entry Title: Learning to slay: A photo essay about Wisconsin's teen drag queens Entry Credit: Ruthie Hauge Judge Comment: Great art. Great page design. The Cap Times photography department did a great job of presenting a unique story and culture to its readers.
Place Name: Honorable Mention Contestant Name: The Gazette Entry Title: The Year in Photos Entry Credit: Anthony Wahl Judge Comment: Really amazing photos. I wanted to move this one up in my ranking but I wanted to see many, many more photos — perhaps four or five pages worth. After all, it was a year in review. These were the only captivating photos you took all year? Doubtful.
Competition Comment: Tough judging assignment. The top three in my book were practically tied for first. All the photographs that entered were award-winners. Wisconsin has some great photographers on their newspaper staffs. I was forced to go beyond just the photo essay and to judging time, space and resources allocated to each project. Amazing work by all the competitors.
