2022 WNA Foundation Better Newspaper Contest

Community Engagement Award ( Division E,Division D,Division C) Back

  • Place Name: First Place
    Contestant Name: Peninsula Pulse
Entry Title: What You Can Learn From the Door County Budget Project
Entry Credit: Jackson Parr, Debra Fitzgerald
Judge Comment: This is clearly a ton of work. So much work the entrant had to find a creative way to get a freelancer to crunch the data. The result is information about a region's local governments and how they collect and spend money in a way that any reasonable reader can absorb.
  • Place Name: Second Place
    Contestant Name: Valley Sentinel
    Entry Title: Impulse Initiative
    Entry Credit: Taylor Scott
Judge Comment: Great use of 21st century media to address a long term problem. This is about making the Pulse a thought leader and a change agent. In other words, relevant. Just what our industry needs.
  • Place Name: Third Place
    Contestant Name: Vilas County News-Review
    Entry Title: Warm The Children
Entry Credit: Toni Ruthven, Liz Schmidt
Judge Comment: A good example of a traditional community campaign. Clearly takes lots of work and coordination. Who would be in a better position to oversee a project like this if not the local newspaper?
  • Competition Comment: All the entrants demonstrated concern for their communities, and they showed they are willing to work hard to make a difference. In my mind, the top entries went beyond promoting community charity with "earned media" and used digital assets, even TED talks, to educate the community and position themselves as thought leaders.
