2022 WNAF Collegiate Better Newspaper Contest

Feature Story ( Division A) Back

  • Place Name: First Place
    Contestant Name: The Advance-Titan
Entry Title: Save a kitten this holiday season
    Entry Credit: Katie Pulvermacher
Judge Comment: This is a great story. Kept my attention until the end (and I am not especially fond of cats), it was well organized and logical so the reader could keep up and make sense of the material, as well as understand how this is a positive move for the community. It was just a well-done, well-written story. Great job!
  • Place Name: Second Place
    Contestant Name: The Badger Herald
Entry Title: ‘Chorus of pressure’: Washington Post opinion columnist Catherine Rampell’s rise to journalistic prominence
    Entry Credit: Audrey Thibert
    Judge Comment: Good solid reporting.
  • Place Name: Third Place
    Contestant Name: The Daily Cardinal
Entry Title: Keeping it civil: How students in Wisconsin’s premier swing county debate politics with dignity
    Entry Credit: Tyler Katzenberger
Judge Comment: Well-written story, well-sourced and very well-balanced. After reading the last word, I felt I was able to make up my own mind about the newspeg — I had the facts from both sides and very little subjectivity. Great piece of journalism.
  • Place Name: Honorable Mention
    Contestant Name: The Daily Cardinal
Entry Title: Second-wave feminism follows Cardinal alumna
    Entry Credit: Jessica Sonkin
Judge Comment: Good, solid piece. What kept it from being a 10 was the lack of detail about what it was like to be among the first female journalists, the atmosphere, the challenges.
  • Competition Comment: This was a great competition to judge. All the stories were more than worthy and it was hard to make some of the decisions. Good, solid reporting across the board. The four stories that places just had an extra level of professionalism and going the extra mile. They added details that made the story sing. ALL entries, however, need better copyediting.
