Place Name: First Place Contestant Name: The Badger Herald Entry Title: Erin Gretzinger Entry Credit: Erin Gretzinger Judge Comment: Exceptional reporting. Great use of narrative ledes to put faces on issues and get readers into the story. Great use of quotes. You will make some newspaper, radio or TV news very happy when you go to work for them. I expect to see you win more journalism contests in the years to come. If I'm lucky, you'll apply for one of our open positions.
Place Name: Second Place Contestant Name: Marquette Tribune Entry Title: TJ Dysart, Marquette University Entry Credit: TJ Dysart Judge Comment: Good reporting. Good use of quotes.
Place Name: Third Place Contestant Name: Royal Purple Entry Title: Pick of the litter Entry Credit: Parker Olsen Judge Comment: I got a little bogged down by all the alphabet soup in the lede paragraphs. I'm wondering if you could have delayed some of it until the following paragraphs. Also, consider altering your ledes from time to time, from traditional pyramid style to narrative lede to blind lede, etc., to keep things fresh and interesting. Still, solid reporting. You will makes some sports editor very happy when they hire you.
Place Name: Honorable Mention Contestant Name: The Clarion Entry Title: Kelly Feng Entry Credit: Kelly Feng Judge Comment: Good job! Keep up the good work!
Competition Comment: Four really good journalists who will go far in this industry. It's good to see that our college journalism classes are putting out quality reporters/photographers. I hear all the time how our college journalism classes are sending out journalism graduates who are unprepared for real-world journalism, but these four reporters prove that statement to be wrong. I would hire any of these reporters to work at my newspaper. (Hint: please apply!!!).
